Oh, Christmas Tree, Oh, Christmas Tree!

Howard Van Smith was a Pulitzer Prize winning agricultural writer who was featured in Edward R. Murrow’s (CBS) award-winning documentary ‘Harvest of Shame’.  For those of you who are celebrating the holidays with a real tree here is Howard’s formula for keeping the tree hydrated and fresh.

1-Gallon water    2- Cups Corn Syrup

4 OZ. Chelated Iron (careful as it can stain)

1 T. Liquid (soluble) Fertilizer

Immerse tree in the solution for 24 hours before setting up. Keep the reservoir in the stand full. The tree can absorb as much as a gallon of this solution per day.
